Hi Leigh
This time at ITESM has been great, but maybe at the end of the day my hair will turn all gray, hahaha.
I believe it's true as you say, it's the pedagogy stupid, I mean, I would say a teacher should be an intellectual-practical, stupid, both sides of the story.
If you say in a teacher's meeting let's be real intellectual workers. Crew maybe say what are you talking about? We are only technicians that applicate a method others design. In very busy for change now, recommend us a new book for our courses.
Paradigm change it's so hard to do.

Ahh Thanks Leigh. I jumped onto this theme as I thought the old look was too boring .. this one is fun! And I thought I could honor Mexico a bit more using the national colors ... but guess what? .. Some users say that they prefer the old color scheme. This one does look a little "Christmasy" .. so maybe each month I can mix up the colors a bit ... might be fun! ... Starting with flag colors is a "proper" start .. then we can go from there .... This theme has a much more "social" feel as well, which I thought would appeal to members and perhaps stimulate more sharing ....

Came across this CALL doc on the Web while reading an article .. it's a bit dated, but thought I'd pass it on to you since it is one of your areas of interest, http://www.iateflcompsig.org.uk/media/callpresentpastandfuture.pdf

Hi Leigh!

I happened to stumble upon your comment to to Frank and I saw that you'll take Enhancing Lessons EVO09 session which is one of the sessions that I'm moderating this year.

You may remember me, I met you in Toluca. Vero and I "helped" you to move into your new apartment when you arrived to Toluca. Does it ring a bell?
How are your cats? Have you settled fine in Mexico City?

I'll be great to be interacting at Enhancing Lessons.
See you around!
Besos.

Hello, Leigh. Happy to meet you. The videobachilleratos are high school centers. The name of "video" could immediatly connect you with VIDEOS or TV, but as a matter of fact, that is not the reality now. The videobachilleratos were born following the model of the videobachilleratos in Veracruz. At the beginning they used a lot of video, but now, that it not the case, the teachers don´t use the videos as at the beginning. They were used because they did not have enough teachers or knowledge to give all the subjects. SABES is a very big educational system in Guanajuato, you could check the web portal.sabes.edu.mx.
I wish you a good day,
maricruz

About Me:
I am a teacher of advanced English as a Second/Foreign Language (is that un-PC?) and have lived in Mexico for 5 years. I started at ITESM - Campus Toluca where I created that school's self access center called the Language Learning Resource Center. I transferred to the Mexico City campus this past summer to hopefully repeat my sucess there.

As money is always in short supply, I would like to first concentrate on Internet-based technologies that do not require (absolutely) a school-based center.

Im also a Wikipediaholic and have a userpage there (type User:Thelmadatter in the search box) and while I say I write education and Mexico-related stuff, most of my work is on Mexico. I used this site extensively in the Fall 2007 semester having students contribute to the site and have contact with other Wikipedians. In the process of writing an article about it and I presented about this at the MexTESOL conference in Leon GTO.
I Teach/Taught at:
University
I Want to Learn More About:
Task-Based Teaching and Learning, Web Technologies, Methodologies, Linguistics, Adults, Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking, Educational Psychology
One Thing I'd Like to Improve Upon Is:
Knowledge about teaching and technology so I can help other teachers try at least one of the myriad of options there are out there!
I Am Most Interested in META for:
Professional Development
I heard about META from:
MexTESOL convention!

Back to work (or To heck with the swine flu! eat a taco al pastor!)

I haven't been active on this Ning for the past couple of weeks due to that lovely H1N1 bug that got everyone into a tizzy. While I didnt get sick (thank goodness), its really hard to get motivated to do anything when life is so out-of-whack. Finally, high schools and unis have reopened and Im back at work. Life in Mexico City is slowly coming back to normal, esp. if you consider it normal to have someone do a health screening on you coming back onto campus after buying a cup of coffee at 7-11!… Continue

To twit or not to twit

On one site I use to connect with other English teachers,David's ELT World discussion forums, there is a lively thread on Twitter. IT basically started out with an invitation to those on the forum to connect via Twitter, but it has quickly grown to 'battle' (for lack of a better word) between those of us who love it and those who hate it.

Now, from the last sentence, you probably guessed that I love Twitter. And I do. But Im not going to soapbox here and tell you that unless you use Twitter, yo… Continue

Wikis, materials online and visual abilities

Things are a little slow in the self access lab, so I have been putting some of that time into working on my wiki http://virtuallanguagelaboratory.wikispaces.com A LOT of time is getting eaten up just with trying to put some color into the thing. Part of the reason for this is that wikispaces' tools are a bit primitive and slow but as I work on this site and other web-based projects, the realization that I need at least basic graphic design skills becomes very apparent to me.

In a number of vid… Continue

What is a Self-Access Center?

Self-access language learning centers, or self-access centers (SAC's) are facilities designed to promote autonomous or self-directed language learning in students. Physically, they are usually one or more rooms with equipment and materials that students access and use on their own. Most importantly, the SAC has staff that is available to guide students if and when they need it.

A SAC can be considered as a cross between a classroom, a library and a traditional language lab. Like the classroom,… Continue

Its the pedagogy stupid!

Back when Bill Clinton was running for president in 1992, he had a sign at headquarters that said "Its the economy, stupid!" The idea behind it was that in the hustle-and-bustle and general insanity of a campaign, it is easy to lose sight of what is absolutely most important... and what should be obvious.

In the world of educational technology, we very often find ourselves in the same position. Ask just about any teacher which is more important.. technology or good teaching and I will bet you t… Continue
